An Aeronautical Engineer's View.....The Vought F4U Corsair and its Contemporaries (6th Edition), by Tom Brinkman, is a well researched, factual and historical description of five legendary United States fighter aircraft of WW II - the Vought F4U Corsair, Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, North American P-51 Mustang, Grumman F6F Hellcat, and Lockheed P-38 Lightning. This book presents a clear description of the design rationale, capabilities, characteristics, performance, and limitations of each of these superlative aircraft. Also included are American vs. Axis aircraft dog fighting comparisons, results of formal military competitive fly-offs, and mock dog fighting match-ups between these aircraft. Several key flight behavior characteristics which are very rarely discussed are explained, and perspectives on a number of important topics not often given coverage in the popular media are presented. Brinkman has given many presentations on his book, including a symposium with several original VMF-214 "Black Sheep" pilots. Brinkman is an aeronautical engineer, retired from a career in engineering, engineering management, and program management with IBM Corp and several other companies in the computer industry.

Tom Brinkman has authored "An Aeronautical Engineers View The F4U Corsair and its Contemporaries", and has co-authored "Marine Wings Stories of war & peace as written by the pilots". Tom is a retired engineering manager with a BS and MS in Aeronautics & Engineering Mechanics, University of Minnesota; and an MS in Electrical Engineering, University of Vermont. Tom is Past President of a large WWII Round Table in Rochester, MN.

An Aeronautical Engineer’s View…The Vought F4U Corsair and its Contemporaries eBook Tom Brinkman

Not a bad effort in attempting to quantify something as elusive as aircraft performance when there are few harder subjects. The author understands how mission specialization, available technology, and development time all impact on the final configuration and performance of the aircraft. Using those parameters, he then looks at maintenance and how the units learned how to operate their aircraft in the field. The author also takes great pains to explain the differences brought on by design philosophies, both from the designer and the customer and how those impact on aircraft performance.
The author makes use of the reports from the Pax River Fighter Conference which in itself is a very interesting read. https://www.amazon.com/Report-Joint-Fighter-Conference-Patuxent/dp/0764304046/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1484604844&sr=1-1-fkmr0&keywords=pax+river+fighter+conference

If you're a sophisticated reader of technical aviation journals, this may seem a quick and trite read. I would recommend this book to anyone who argues that one particular airplane is the best of the best and anyone with a general interest in aircraft design.

An Aeronautical Engineer’s View…The Vought F4U Corsair and its Contemporaries eBook Tom Brinkman Reviews

Nice, informative. Further cemented my belief in the Corsair's dominance and relative capability compared to other fighters.
This is a book about the Vought F4U Corsair and nothing else. I expected more. A quite nice reading anyway.
Its plain to see the author's bias in the Corsair as compared to the other aircraft he lists. Quite a few basic errors of fact. I don't know if its the fact that he interviewed quite a few Corsair pilots or just his take on his favorite aircraft, but the worship is evident. Not that I consider the Corsair a bad aircraft-I like it a lot and its combat record speaks for itself. But it would have been a better book if the facts had been laid out on the other aircraft he portrays.
If you are looking for a good read on the Corsair, this is a pretty good book to begin with. Id recommend you take the comparisons with a grain of salt.
Great book, very in depth on technical issues.
*The Vought F4U Corsair and Its Contemporaries* -- ia a very detailed analysis of the best of WW-II USA [and Allied] fighters. Detailed accounts of each type of aircraft are re-enforced by numerical analysis, numerical tables, critical statistics [such as win / loss ratios], testing and action accounts, Allied pilot and officer accounts, Axis pilot and officer accounts -- and just about any topic relevant to such a cross-comparison of these aircraft -- especially the Lightning, Thunderbolt, Mustang, Hellcat and Corsair. It goes way beyond merely [just] *An Aeronautical Engineer's View* -- as such different, detailed and numerical sources and analysis are woven into this work. Thomas Brinkman is very careful in seeking the best comparisons and conclusions on these aircraft -- and fully admits the remaining tenative aspects -- while indeed moderately concluding that the F4U Corsair has the best combined balance of virtues and even some unmatched aspects. Being a Corsair fan, I was hoping it would do well -- to back my own point-of-view -- but, I did not expect such a very detailed and balanced work. The book itself is very clearly written in very clear fonts with very clear tables -- so, it would be wonderful if a new edition is printed +++
A must read if you're a Vought F4U Corsair fan!!!!!!! Can get a little technical but still understandable and a good read. You WILL learn something new by reading this!!!
Slow reading but in-depth analysis. This isnt your usual " I like ******* so it must be better than everything else" kind of book. This book is detailed and well explained.
